The residents of Riverfront Park have a long-standing relationship with local non-profits and this holiday season the residents of the Glass House are partnering with Fresh Start to give back to the young community leaders of Sun Valley who have exhibited tremendous work-ethic and perseverance over the past year. The tree has been beautifully decorated with hand-crafted ornaments, each of which detail the hobbies and interests of a child in the Sun Valley community. Glass House residents have the opportunity to “adopt” as many children as they like fulfilling their holiday wish-list.
Founded six years ago, Fresh Start aims to introduce opportunity to the youth population in Denver’s impoverished Sun Valley neighborhood. Founder and Executive Director, Jeanne Granville, believes power lies in a hand-up not a hand-out. The foundation engages neighborhood children in after school programming and weekend events that expose students to ideas and possibilities they may have never otherwise been exposed to. By exploring an array of activities, the children are able to actively explore their personalities and engage their passions. From tending to the community garden, creating baked goods from the season’s bumper crops, nurturing a small start-up or learning the fundamentals of coding and computer programming, kids are given the opportunity to discover their boundaries.
Fresh Start’s hands-on approach is specifically designed to ensure the neighborhood’s growing community is exposed to possibilities expanding far beyond their classroom walls. Who knows, you may see them in Riverfront Park selling lemonade or outside of Mile High selling Broncos themed bandanas prior to the game. This year’s giving tree is one way for the residents of Glass House to reward the children’s ambitious behavior with holiday gifts that inspire their creative passion.
