Put on your party hat and your running shoes because our neighborhood is celebrating!   For a long time the area in front of REI, and one of our favorite running trails, has been under redevelopment with a vision for a new public space.  This weekend we celebrate the completion of that vision.  The new plaza, rendering below, is a full functional and aesthetic upgrade to this great space.

Please join Mayor Michael Hancock for the celebration of River Vision and the Grand Opening of Shoemaker Plaza! There will be for music, food trucks, river recreational demos, and more to celebrate the completion of this exciting project along the S. Platte River.  The bike and running trails and ramps have been improved, the plaza and recreational space expanded, and the landscaping and design upgraded.  Denver, and the Riverfront Denver corridor, are gaining and amazing new public space amenity.

This isn’t the only public space improvement in the Riverfront Denver area.  This summer marked a series of arts and cultural events within the neighborhood.  This summer Commons Park hosted our first series of music events in the park. This is a significant and wonderful change to the parks operation.

Prior to this year no programming was scheduled in Commons Park.  While it may have been a beautiful place to walk and run, park restrictions prevented organized events from being scheduled.   Organizers put their heads together and figured out a way to change this with a lineup that included the Swallow Hill Music Series accompanied by Food Truck offerings, Tai Chi classes, Yoga, and even line dancing.

Parks are meant to be enjoyed.  This year Commons Park elevated it’s game in doing that.

Even the Plaza got in on the fun. This past weekend the DCPA hosted its very first Shakespeare in the Plaza event. With a magical performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” our neighborhood hosted a great event.  Here’s a bit of trivia, the DCPA told audience goers this was there first performance to both humans and dogs.  How often do you get a dog friendly theater performance.

Let’s celebrate our great outdoor spaces and thank you Denver for giving us the new Shoemaker’s Plaza, the new summer programming in Commons Park, and the talented thespians of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.  While we’re at it thank you William Shakespeare. You’ve still got it.
